#20 Star Wars (Episode IV: A New Hope)
Saturday Jan 22, 2022
Saturday Jan 22, 2022
The pitch: "Come up with a prequel to Star Wars - Episode IV: A New Hope."
www.shoulderspod.com/starwars
The original:
Star Wars (Episode IV: A New Hope, 1977)
Directed by:
George Lucas (THX 1138, American Graffiti)
Starring:
Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Alec Guinness, Peter Cushing, David Prowse, Peter Mayhew, Anthony Daniels, Kenny Baker
What's it about?
A fairy tale, a fantasy, and a sci-fi film about a young farm boy who, when his adoptive family is killed, joins a Wizard-Ronin, Space-Smuggler and a Walking Carpet to deliver a message, save a Princess and fight to help over-throw a fascist regime.
A film that instantly became a phenomenon, spawning sequels, prequels, tie-ins, spin-offs, rip-offs and taught literally hundreds of millions of children that there is wonder in the Universe.
If you grew up in the 80’s, there’s a strong chance this, and its two sequels, are as much a part of your childhood (and dare we say, adulthood) as anything else.
Not before or since has nostalgia fused with reality, creating a blanket of experiences ranging from your favourite bedspread to eventual world-view.
Easy to dismiss, easier to embrace, Star Wars marked a time and place like nothing else, all from the comfort of your own imagination, and a galaxy, far, far away.
“Wonderful girl. Either I’m going to kill her, or I’m beginning to like her.”
“Don’t call me a mindless philosopher, you over-weight glob of grease.”
“I find your lack of faith disturbing.”
“That’s great, kid! Don’t get cocky.”

#19 Three Men And A Baby/Little Lady
Saturday Jan 08, 2022
Saturday Jan 08, 2022
Three Men And A Baby / Little Lady (1987 / 1990)
Directed by: Leonard Nimoy (ST 3: The Search for Spock, ST 4: The Voyage Home, The Good Mother) /
Emile Ardolino (Dirty Dancing, Sister Act, Chances Are)
Starring: Tom Selleck, Steve Guttenberg, Ted Danson, Nancy Travis, Sheila Hancock, Fiona Shaw
Three confirmed bachelors have their worlds turned upside down and inside out when a baby is left on their doorstep.
…Do they find what it means to be responsible? Sort of.
…Do they discover there’s more to life than having fun? In a manner of speaking.
…Do they become better, richer people? Not really, to be honest.
None the less, this is a fun film, with likeable performances from the three leads, light direction from Nimoy, and lots of jokes about how baby poo is smelly.
A silly but likeable sequel follows our heroes and their now five-year-old ‘daughter’, as they travel to England, insult the locals and one of them finds love.
…Is the world crying out for a third part? We’ll get back to you.
“There's a quarter of a million dollars in heroin in the diaper pail and the new baby wipes are in the hall cabinet.”
“Jack has a baby?”
“I realise such a concept tends to negate our belief in a benevolent God, but yes.”
“I’ll give you a thousand dollars if you do it.”

#18 Commando
Saturday Jan 01, 2022
Saturday Jan 01, 2022
The original: Commando (1985)
Directed by: Mark L. Lester (Firestarter, Class of 1999, Pterodactyl)
Starring: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Vernon Wells, Rae Dawn Chong, Dan Hedaya, Alyssa Milano, James Olson, Bill Duke, David Patrick Kelly, Michael Delano, Drew Snyder
What's it about? When a retired Special Forces colonel has his ten-year-old daughter kidnapped by an angry ex, John Matrix (Schwarzenegger) must go ‘Full Commando’, gun-up, man-up and tear-up the list of those responsible, killing with quips of the very highest order and dispensing violence most bloody.
What some consider the peak of Arnie’s 80’s Golden Era, Commando has it all. A tight plot, inventive deaths, a witty script and a leading man hitting a stride unparalleled in blockbusting action heroes before or since.
Fun, fast and frantic, Commando solidified Arnie as more than a novelty, instead a juggernaut of both biceps and bravado.
He’s been in better films, but perhaps none which take such delight in destruction, or mirth in mayhem.
“Come on, Bennett, let’s party.”

Bubble Episode: No Time To Die
Thursday Dec 30, 2021
Thursday Dec 30, 2021
Welcome to the third special Bubble edition of our Pod!
No Time to Die discussed
(aka- No Timer too Dire)
(No Tie to Diet)
(No Crime for Pie)
This week on Shoulders of Giants, it’s Bubble Oh Heaven, as we delve deep into the new Bond film No Time to Die.
Less a structured dissection, more a whiny tirade, join our heroes as they have a spoiler-filled ramble about their first thoughts and reactions to
Daniel Craig’s fifth and final outing as agent 007.
Note-
The ethos of this pod is always to celebrate film and to never be negative.
But as Professor Dent often put it, “If you give your heart a voice with which to sing, you wont always get a lullaby.”
And likewise, a quote easily attributed to Oddjob, “Sometimes a vent is as good as a holiday on Octopussy’s island, and a moan as relaxing as an
afternoon in Scaramanga’s fun house.”
(But then he would say that, wouldn’t he? Never shuts up, that one.)
